The Year 8 Dance course is centred around providing opportunities for students to engage in the unique experience of dance and performance. Students who select Year 8 Dance will be part of the Seton Year 8 Dance Troupe, a team of dancers who will train together, challenge each other, and perform at various school events and interschool dance festivals. Hence, the study of dance in Year 8 has a strong focus on the practical demonstration of skills and knowledge. Students are required to be actively involved in the process of preparing for live performance.

This includes developing skills in:

  • various styles of choreography (Hip Hop & Broadway Jazz)

  • exploring creative expression in movement

  • choreographic devices and tools

  • training and conditioning the body using safe dance principles

  • rehearsing and contributing to class dances

  • performing to peers and public audiences

Students will amalgamate their knowledge and experience over the year in a final dance project whereby small groups will choreograph, prepare and perform their own dance works that will be performed at the annual Seton Dance Showcase.

Dance offers a dynamic learning environment which becomes a successful platform to foster personal growth in individuals. Through the nature of this course, students are encouraged to develop in confidence, self-esteem, teamwork skills, problem solving, resilience and an awareness of self and individual capabilities.

Assessment

Whilst the focus will be mainly on practical and performance based assessments, students will also be assessed on their ability to document the dance process, analyse and critique performances and create new works.
