Learn how to design your own projects and make them in the workshop!
This year-long course is designed to introduce students to various tools, machines and processes in the workshop. Students will be working with wood and following a design process to create personalised projects.
They will use hand tools and gradually learn how to use more machines in the workshop, which will form the foundation for them to continue in this area in Year 9 and 10. By the end of this course the students will have designed and produced a variety of projects including small pieces of furniture. They will develop their skills and understanding in the practical use of the workshop as well as their creative and analytical skills through their design work.
During this course students will learn about:
Safety in the workshop
Using selected tools and machines
Working with different types of wood
Critiquing designs and sketch design idea’s
Sustainability and the environmental impact of different materials.
Assessment
Assessments will be primarily practical and will cover various projects created in the workshop. Students will also be assessed on their ability to critique designs and come up with original ideas during the design process. Their work will be documented and reflected upon using a variety of assessment strategies over the course of the year.
