This course looks at the changing role of the family and responsibilities involved in helping to meet the basic needs of children. Many young people begin babysitting as their first paid job – this subject will cover much of what you need to know - child development, play, first aid and safety. You will be given the opportunity to learn about the basic needs of children, the importance of play, changing role of families and child safety. Practical experiences will include creating and evaluating toys for children, designing items for the nursery and food for young children.

Whilst supporting the development of general life skills, this course will assist those interested in working in any of a large range of career areas including:

  • Health (eg nursing, counselling, working with the disabled);

  • Education (eg  teacher, education support assistant, childcare provider);

  • Childcare (eg childcare, babysitting, nanny/au pair);

  • Future parenting (many or most students will become parents in the future.)

Assessment

Students will be assessed according to the College Assessment Procedure.  They will be required to demonstrate outcomes from the Technologies Learning Area and will be assessed on a number of occasions throughout the year. A variety of assessment strategies have been implemented into the programme, including both practical and theoretical components. A more comprehensive assessment breakdown can be obtained from the Technologies Faculty staff.
